Meet Devin Williams. He is our recipient for the 9th Annual Throwdown Surf Classic. He is a fifth grader at KHES (Kitty Hawk Elementary School) who has been diagnosed with Infantile Battens Disease. His parents are Daniel and Melissa Williams. Devin is 1 of 6 in the world with this rare Infantile Battens Disease which is an inherited disorder of the nervous system. Overtime he will become totally disabled, the outcome is fatal and there is no cure.
Devin is a loving, caring and outgoing kid who loves to fish. His favorite fish to catch is Mahi Mahi. Mahi Mahi means very strong in Hawaiian. As everyone can imagine the gradual deterioration is heart breaking to watch. There is hope of research starting on this disease in the future. Can the research help Devin in time? We aren’t sure, but we are going to try to help him. For more info about Devin and his illness you can follow his Facebook page Devin Tackles Battens Disease.
Each year we are blessed to have some of the Outer Banks finest surfboard shapers along with our local surf shops donating brand new boards to be placed in our raffle and silent auction.
Where else can you go and have a chance to win one of five brand new surfboards!
Seven years ago, local Outer Bankers and surf enthusiasts, Greg Sherman and Stephen Lamm decided that they wanted to do something for the OBX community they hold near and dear to their hearts.
So, they figured they would stick to something they know well and love, surfing.
And the Throw Down North of Town Surf Classic was born.
